Wireless Network

The campus wireless network allows you to use a wireless enabled device, such as a notebook computer, on campus to do internet research, surf the web, check your e-mail, and anything where a network connection is required.

The campus wireless network can be accessed in many classrooms and public areas. Please see the wireless coverage map for buildings containing wireless. To access the wireless network you must have an 802.11b or 802.11g compliant network card and a CSUSB e-mail account. The Data Center & Helpdesk Services is responsible for setting up your laptop to access the wireless network. You can contact the Data Center & Helpdesk Services at (909) 537-7677.

In general, wireless networks at CSUSB are installed in areas where hard-wired networks cannot be installed, or in open, public areas used by students. Because of limited bandwidth and problems with radio interference and with security, wireless networks are typically not used as inexpensive alternatives to hard-wired networks.

All requests for the deployment and use of a wireless network on the CSUSB campus must be approved by the Information Security Office (ISO - http://www.infosec.csusb.edu/ ) before the deployment of the wireless network. The ISO will ensure that procedures and safeguards have been established to prevent the unauthorized use of the wireless network. Also, the ISO will confirm that the proposed wireless network will not expose the campus to potential security compromises and privacy violations.

Wireless networking products and services are extensions of the telecommunications network provided by the Telecommunications and Network Services Department (TNS - http://tns.csusb.edu/ ). TNS currently purchases and installs all core networking hardware and services for the campus community. In an effort to maintain the integrity, inter-operability and performance of the campus network services, all wireless networking products and services will be designed, procured, and installed by TNS.

More details about installing and using wireless networks at CSUSB can be found in the CSUSB Policy on Wireless Networks.
