Telecommunications & Network Services has implemented a wireless network. This added much needed network service to the old dorms and gave the campus the ability to access the internet using any notebook computer and wireless card.

What is a wireless Network?

A wireless Network (sometimes called Wireless LAN) is a network that allows access to the internet without the need for any network wire connections to a computer.


What do I need to begin using the wireless?


What type of wireless card do I need?

The wireless card must be 802.11b compliant.


What configurations do I need to make to my computer?

When configuring your network adaptor on you laptop, you need to specify the SSID in capital letters as "CSUSB". You also need to specify for your network adaptor to work with dhcp.


What is an SSID?

SSID stands for service set identifier. SSID can also be referred to as the network name. Each wireless network in any given area has a unique SSID. In order to connect to the CSUSB wireless network, your computer must know the SSID of the network. The SSID for CSUSB campus is "CSUSB" in capital letters.


What is DHCP?

DHCP stands for Dynamic Hostname Configuration Protocol. When your computer uses this protocol, it is automatically configured with an address which you need in order to be on the CSUSB network.


Can anybody connect to CSUSB wireless networks?

No. Authentication is needed to use the network.


How do I get a username and a password to authenticate (log in)?

Your username is the same as your e-mail username (without the @csusb.edu) and your password is the same as your e-mail password.


Where on campus can I connect with wireless?

In general, any place where students gather, such as classrooms, lounges, and the commons. However, you should check the wireless coverage map.

My configurations are all setup. What should I do next?

Open up your browser (e.g. internet explorer or netscape). If everything is setup right, it should take you to the login in page where you are to put in your username and your password in order to use the internet.
