Seven volunteers, planners and service providers for Cal State San Bernardino’s Latino Education and Advocacy Days will receive the prestigious Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama, the highest level of recognition for volunteerism.
The recipients from CSUSB are:
- Enrique Murillo, LEAD founder and executive director and professor of teacher education and foundations, College of Education;
- Aurora Vilchis, student adviser, College of Extended Learning;
- Patricia Aguilera, work-study coordinator, Division of Student Affairs;
- Iwona-Maria Luczkiewicz Contreras, administrative analyst/specialist, John M. Pfau Library;
- Rob Garcia, web liason/developer, Information and Technology Services;
- Jesse Felix, interim associate director, Student Recreation and Wellness Center; and
- Valentina Felix, project manager, Information and Decision Sciences.
Each will receive an enlarged personalized certificate and congratulatory letter signed by the president of the United States, along with a lifetime coin. The awardees will be honored during the annual LEAD Volunteer Recognition Dinner on Friday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. in San Bernardino.
Now in its eighth year, LEAD serves as a primary site for a set of innovative and productive programs, publications and events for Latinos and education. These projects involve significant participation of faculty, students and administrators, as well as partnerships in the region and nationally.
The projects also create strong interactive connections with Latino networks in the U.S., as well as Latin Americans and Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas and the world, many whom are already in contact with LEAD personnel and the university.
