Sanjoy Chakravorty, a renowned scholar and professor of geography and urban studies at Temple University, will be the guest speaker when the Cal State San Bernardino Gamma Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Delta hosts its annual Spring Banquet.
Reservations for the banquet, set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Santos Manuel Student Union Fourplex, are due by Monday, May 23 to Rika Dawson at rdawson@csusb.edu.
Cost is $25 for faculty and staff, and $5 for students; the banquet, which will also feature an awards ceremony, is open to all.
Chakravorty will speak on “Selected for Success: Indians in America.” The lecture is from his latest book, “The Other One Percent: Indians in America,” which is a careful, data-driven and comprehensive account of the three-core process — selection, assimilation, and entrepreneurship — that have led to their rapid rise.
Chakravorty’s research has focused on two broad themes — empirical work on India and theoretical work on distribution and (now) epistemology. His research has been funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. National Institute of Justice, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and the World Bank.
