CSUSB anthropology professor participates in collaborative study on life in sub-Saharan Africa thousands of years agoScience DailyMay 30, 2019 A collaborative study led by archaeologists, geneticists and museum curators – including Peter Robertshaw, CSUSB professor of anthropology – is providing answers to previously unsolved questions about life in sub-Saharan Africa thousands of years ago. The results were published online in the journal Science on May 30. Researchers from North American, European and African institutions analyzed ancient DNA from 41 human skeletons curated in the National Museums of Kenya and Tanzania, and the Livingstone Museum in Zambia. The research provides a look at the origins and movements of early African food producers. The research article may be found online at “Ancient DNA reveals a multistep spread of the first herders into sub-Saharan Africa.”
CSUSB history professor offers analysis on latest developments in Iran-U.S. tensionsPress TVMay 30, 2019 David Yaghoubian, CSUSB professor of history, appeared in a segment on the Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, who said that returning to the negotiating table with the U.S. regarding Iran’s nuclear program “is deleterious and of no use.” As tensions increased between Iran and the U.S. over sanctions and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, the multi-national nuclear agreement with Iran – which the U.S. pulled out of last year – U.S. President Donald Trump has said he was willing to begin talks. Yet also occurring were comments by Trump and his administration that Iran sees as threats, along with a buildup of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf region. Yaghoubian, in response to a question about Khamenei’s stance of not negotiating with the Trump administration, said, “I think he put it really very eloquently. He said that in this context, this would not be negotiation. This would be picking the fruits of pressure. In other words, this would be rewarding truly not just bad, but illegal behavior – illegal in the context of international law, illegal in the context of United Nations resolution 2231. And so it simply would not be responsible to negotiate with the United States in light of the actions that the United State has taken.” Watch the online video of the interview at “Negotiation with US ‘total loss’: Ayatollah Khamenei.” Press TV is a 24-hour English language news and documentary network affiliated with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
