Sylvester James “Jim” Gates, a theoretical physicist and the Ford Foundation Physics Professor and Affiliate Mathematics Professor at Brown University, will visit Cal State San Bernardino Monday, May 20, to present his lecture, “Einstein v Robert,” in the Health and Physical Education building, room 124, 1-2:30 p.m. The discussion, which focuses on why diversity makes excellent science, will be open to the public. Parking at CSUSB is $6. “The College of Natural Sciences at CSUSB is committed to student success and is committed to its core values – strive for excellence, enhance diversity, and foster harmony,” said Sastry Pantula, dean of the College of Natural Sciences. “We are thrilled to have Professor Gates on our campus to share his scientific and historical perspective about how fostering diversity and closing the gaps in STEM fields are critical for scientific excellence. It is timely as we celebrate 50 years of affirmative action.” According to his abstract, Gates wrote his essay, “Equity v. Excellence: A False Dichotomy in Science & Society,” in response to the question, “Why is affirmative action fair?” Over 20 years and a number of essays later, this journey resulted in a citation by the United States Supreme Court in the case of Fisher v. University of Texas. The narrative arc of this journey will be presented. Gates earned a bachelor’s in physics as well as math, and a doctorate in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
