The Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA) at Cal State San Bernardino will present a lecture by W. Benson Harer Egyptology Scholar in Residence Jessica Tomkins, “Weapons and Warfare in Ancient Egypt,” on Wednesday, March 6, at noon. The evolution of hunting tools into weapons used for armed conflict against other humans is a cross-cultural, almost universal trait among early human societies. This talk will explore the evolution of Egyptian weaponry and discuss the ideology of warfare in the Egyptian worldview. Tomkins is the inaugural W. Benson Harer Egyptology Scholar in Residence at Cal State San Bernardino, where she is teaching ancient Egyptian history and researching objects at RAFFMA. She completed her Ph.D. in Egyptology at Brown University in 2018. She holds a master of studies in ancient Greek history from the University of Oxford and a bachelor’s in ancient history and Egyptology from University College London. In 2017, Tomkins worked at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mass., as the Terrace Research Associate in Egyptian Art. She has published research on the local governors of Old Kingdom Egypt and has previously given lectures throughout California and New England. Tomkins will also be leading an all-ages Ancient Egyptian Family Day at RAFFMA on Saturday, March 9, 2-4:30 p.m. The family-friendly event will include a tour of the museum’s ancient Egyptian exhibition, a scavenger hunt and ancient Egyptian-themed art activities. About RAFFMAThe Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art is a nationally recognized museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
