CSUSB professor discusses the role of the internet in article about the radicalization of Washington manChinook Observer (Long Beach, Wash.)Feb. 5, 2019 An article about a man who allegedly promoted his racist beliefs with flyers and an online forum (since taken down) included an interview with Brian Levin, director of the Cal State San Bernardino Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. The newspaper said the 20-year-old man “grew up on the internet,” where “he cultivated his racist beliefs in the safety and anonymity of online forums.” “Social media is now a critical infrastructure element for engaging even unaffiliated extremists into the fold,” said Brian Levin, an attorney, California State University San Bernardino professor and Director for the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. Levin has testified before Congress on the phenomenon of internet radicalization. “It not only ensnares bigots, it also ensnares unstable people who become bigots,” Levin explained. Levin said there is evidence that participation in radical online groups is contributing to the recent precipitous rise in racist, homophobic and antisemitic violence in the United States. There’s no perfect time to bring up your past marriage because every new relationship moves at a different pace.
