Cal State San Bernardino celebrated its 18th December Commencement with three graduation ceremonies on Dec. 8 in the university’s Coussoulis Arena. Out of more than 2,410 students eligible to graduate this fall, nearly 1,250 participated in the ceremonies. “Today is a joyous occasion for our graduates, their families and friends,” said Shari McMahan, CSUSB provost and vice president for academic affairs, during Commencement. “The class of 2018 is an exemplary group of students, and today they join another distinguished group: the alumni of California State University, San Bernardino.” “There has never been a more important time to earn a college degree,” said CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales during his opening speech. “It is the first step on the path to a satisfying career and an engaged life. As you delight in this accomplishment, remember what it took to realize it.” The first ceremony of the day was for the College of Arts & Letters, the Jack H. Brown College of Business & Public Administration and the College of Education. The second was for the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, and the final ceremony was for the College of Natural Sciences. This year the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences had the most students with 411 registered to participate in the fall ceremony, followed by the Brown College with 323, the College of Natural Sciences with 283, the College of Arts & Letters with 202, and the College of Education with 27. “Graduates – today your name is added to the roster of Cal State San Bernardino alumni, a select group of exceptional individuals who continue to influence the world around us; men and women who are improving lives, expanding knowledge and enhancing both their professions and their communities,” Morales said. “Just as we have helped you define your future while at CSUSB, from this day forward, you will determine your life’s path by the decisions you make and actions you take,” he continued. “In doing so, you will also help define the future of this university, enriching its legacy and, in turn, furthering the value of a CSUSB degree – your degree. The needs are many, the demands immense and the solutions elusive. As the Class of 2018, you now must answer the call, accept those challenges and discover a path that leads to resolution.” The December commencement has grown in popularity, especially with out-of-state and international students who have completed their studies in the fall and are likely unable to return for the traditional June graduation, which usually averages about 3,000 graduating students. To learn more about CSUSB’s Commencement ceremonies and what to expect after graduation, visit the Commencement website.
