James D. Crum, 87, dean emeritus in the College of Natural Sciences and a professor of chemistry, passed away on May 5, 2018. Born in Ohio in 1930, he attended the Ohio State University, then Marshall University for his Masters and returned to Ohio State for his PhD in Organic Chemistry. Prior to beginning his teaching career at CSUSB, he was a post-graduate fellow at Harvard and then taught for six years at Case Western Reserve.  He chaired the Chemistry department for two years and served as dean for 19.  He oversaw the expansion of the college, adding new departments and planning new buildings, as well as the evolution of the university from a two-year to a four-year institution. His published work included five books on chemistry. Retiring in 1992, he re-started his chemistry teaching career and, according to his obituary, “judged and then became Director of the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition at the Orange Show for 12 years and obtained the designation of International Wine Master…. He travelled the world teaching chemistry, wine appreciation, climbing more than 20 very tall mountains and consulting in the wine industry,” retiring fully in 2003.  He was survived by his wife of 61 years, Anne Crum, and his three children: Leslie, James Jr. and Jennifer (Rick).
