Richard T. Ackley, 88, professor emeritus in the Political Science department in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, passed away on February 2, 2017. Born in 1928 in Los Angeles, he attended the University of Southern California through the U.S. Navy’s ROTC program, and was the first member of his family to earn a college degree. He built a naval career, serving in the Korean War and on various tours, including one as the Assistant Naval Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. He received a MA in Political Science from the University of Hawaii and retired after his last post as commander of Submarine Division Thirty-One. He returned to USC to earn his PhD in International Relations and began a teaching career in strategy and defense policy at USC, the University of Redlands, and then at CSUSB for 15 years. He made numerous contributions in the fields of strategic studies and defense policy and founded the National Security Studies graduate program at CSUSB. In 1990, he became Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Director Emeritus of National Security Studies.
