Faculty, staff and administrators at Cal State San Bernardino celebrated their hard work and dedication to the university with the third annual Employee Development Day and Appreciation Picnic held Sept. 13 and 14.The two-day event, which was put together by the CSUSB Staff Development Center and Human Resources department, commenced with a Coyote Social Hour in the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration (JHBC) lobby, complete with a light continental breakfast and beverages.Following the social hour, CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales gave the opening remarks, noting the importance of the Staff Development Center, which opened just last year.“The center has exceeded our expectations,” he said. “The center represents a vehicle for professional development and growth … Our students can’t be successful if our faculty and staff are not successful.” Morales encouraged all staff to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the center.Immediately following President Morales, Adriana Kazanjian, executive assistant to the dean in the JHBC, introduced keynote speaker Ellen Contente with her talk “Workplace Change & Resiliency.”Contente is the founder of Heart-Centered Programs — a training and coaching company — and an international speaker and seminar leader. As a professional trainer and coach, she has worked with thousands of professionals across the United States. She is a best-selling author of “M& M’s: Motivational Musings to Live an Inspired Life” and co-author of “Rock your Life.” Contente is also a featured contributor to her local newspaper and Life by Me.Contente’s workshop focused on seven areas: the force driving workplace change, types of change, personality and adaption styles, the transition process, becoming more adaptable, resilience, and energy management.A series of learning sessions were available both days, which were grouped by categories: career and professional development; diversity and inclusion; and health and wellness.The Employee Appreciation Picnic took place the second day on the John M. Pfau Library lawn. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy lunch, music, games and prizes.Divisions also had a chance to compete in a donation contest to benefit the Obershaw DEN food pantry. Employees were asked to donate non-perishable food and hygiene items, which were sorted and weighed during the picnic. For the second consecutive year, the Division of University Advancement brought in the most donations, totaling 1,450 pounds of goods, and received a DEN trophy.
