Study by CSUSB faculty gains national recognitionInlandEmpire.usAug. 29, 2018A study on the sociological effects of homeownership in California by two faculty members of the Cal State San Bernardino Department of Economics has been given a top prize by a national homebuilders group.“California Homeownership and Sociological Factors,” written by Daniel MacDonald and Yasemin Dildar, assistant professors of economics, was awarded the 2017 Best Local Government Affairs Effort in the Government Affairs category by the National Association for Home Builders. The winning study, which was among 120 entries nationwide, was commissioned by the Building Industry Association of Southern California, Baldy View Chapter. CSUSB finance professor interviewed about guaranteed-approval credit cardsWalletHub.comAug. 29, 2018James Estes, CSUSB professor of finance, was featured in WalletHub's piece about guaranteed approval credit cards. He discussed whether companies do issue truly guaranteed credit cards, and whether consumers should trust guaranteed credit card offers that don’t require a credit check.Estes said some banks and card issuers offering such cards may require direct access to a consumer’s savings or checking account, and may also charge a high interest rate.“What the issuers want is to have the consumer run up a debt and make partial payments at a high rate of interest for the longest time possible making the accounts extremely profitable,” Estes said.Read the complete at WalletHub.com.
Residents view San Bernardino County as a ‘very good’ place to live, remain concerned about crime, CSUSB survey shows The Press-Enterprise/The Sun/Inland Valley Daily Bulletin/Redlands Daily FactsAug. 27, 2018Most people living in San Bernardino County like their community, but they’re less confident in the people they elect to lead them and they worry about crime, according to results of the 2018 Inland Empire Annual Survey.The public opinion poll from the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino found that 62 percent of local residents view the county as a “very good” or “fairly good” place to live, down from 70 percent who felt that way in 2017, according to the survey.“I’ve always felt that San Bernardino County gets a bad rap from the press in Los Angeles,” said Cal State San Bernardino Professor Barbara Sirotnik, director of the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis.“People think of San Bernardino County as not a great place to live, yet over time two thirds of residents in the county think it’s a very good or fairly good place to live.”Read the complete article at “Residents view San Bernardino County as a ‘very good’ place to live, remain concerned about crime, survey shows.”
CSUSB adjunct faculty member is a featured speaker at workshop addressing depression and anxiety among youth InlandEmpire.usAug. 27, 2018Sheri Coulson, an adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Cal State San Bernardino, is one of the featured speakers scheduled to participate in a Sept. 21 workshop aimed at teachers, counselors, youth and young adult pastors, and others who work with or support 15-30-year-olds. The objective is to provide information, approaches, resources, and dialogue to aid those who need help in working with this challenging group of people.
