UPDATE: Due to the possibility of rain, the Dia de los Muertos event has been relocated to the Den in the Physical Education building.
“Dia de los Muertos,” or Day of the Dead, a holiday celebrated by Mexican and other Latino cultures to honor the lives of loved ones who have passed, will be hosted by Cal State San Bernardino on today, Friday, Oct. 28.
Sponsored by the Association of Latino Faculty, Staff, and Students and the Santos Manuel Student Union Program Board, the festivities will be held at the university’s Lower Commons from 4-9 p.m.
The event is open to the community; complimentary parking will be available in Lot D, located off Northpark Boulevard and Serrano Village Drive.
The Latino Education and Advocacy Days project will host a community altar to honor and remember the lives of loved ones who have passed.
Throughout the night there will be different activities such as Aztec and folklorico dancers, sugar skull auctions, and craft tables for children. Cultural, artistic, and food vendors will also be present.
While celebrated in both public and private spaces, Dia de los Muertos is often celebrated in homes and graveyards. Originating in the Mexican culture, families traditionally visit the the gravesite of relatives and decorate them with food, flowers, and candles.
