Laura Aceves, a senior runner on the Cal State San Bernardino women’s cross country team, broke the university’s record for the 5,000 meters by nearly one minute.
Aceves, a kinesiology major, covered the course at Fullerton’s Ted Craig Regional Park in 16 minutes, 35.08 seconds during the Biola Invitational cross country meet on Sept. 10. That eclipsed the previous record of 17:34 set by Patricia Cortez in 2014.
The effort earned Aceves CCAA Runner of the Week honors.
Aceves led a strong effort by the Coyotes at the race as five other team members finished in record times, putting them among the top 10 runners in program history over a 5K course.
Michelle Pineda Palacios was next, finishing 25th (17:58.65) and third fastest in school history. Jessica Steinhoff 26th(18:00.56 — fourth fastest) and Rachel Gee 27th (18:04.93 — fifth best). Completing the top five for the Coyotes was Laura Romero (38th, 18:20.62 — eighth best).
Also competing for CSUSB were: Delaney Ellsworth (40th, 18:21.94, ninth best); Cynthia Rivera (68th, 18:55.10); Lauren Boydd (96th, 19:32.09); Karina Budovec (105th, 19:42.16); Alyssa Casillas (109th, 19:45.70); Phillie Bacon (113th, 19:52.32); Angelina Perez (119th, 20:07.66); Shanna Shernaman (129th, 20:32.75); and Christiana Campbell (146th, 21:36.21).
