Cal State San Bernardino will be closed Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.
In addition, the campus also will be closed on Friday, July 1, and subsequent Fridays during the summer as part of its four-day, 40-hour summer workweek.
Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83).
In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.
From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence.
This is the 16th consecutive year the campus has operated on the revised summer schedule. Operating hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday through Sept. 9. Some offices remain open on Fridays during the summer, and University Police remain on duty daily.
The university will return to its traditional five-day work schedule on Monday, Sept. 12.
The condensed workweek has helped the university reduce its energy consumption, while allowing the public more time to access university services during the expanded hours. The university also has encouraged energy conservation measures such as turning off lights in unused rooms, reducing lighting in hallways and turning off computers and other electronic equipment that are not in use.
The campus also will be closed Monday, Sept. 5, in observance of Labor Day.
The university’s summer session classes began June 22. The regular 10-week summer session runs from June 22 through Sept. 1, while accelerated six-week sessions are June 22-July 28 and Aug. 2-Sept. 8.
The fall quarter will begin on Thursday, Sept. 22.
