Neurofeedback research on post-traumatic stress disorder by CSUSB featured in articleBrainTrain BugleApril Edition
Given the nature of their work, U.S. military personnel can be subjected to exceptionally traumatic events. These events can result in PTSD, an ongoing state symptomized by reliving the event, problems with social interactions, a state of hyperarousal and exaggerated startle response, and other forms of moderate to severe distress. Recently, a study using BrainTrain’s SmartMind 3 neurofeedback system was published in NeuroRegulation (McReynolds, et al., 2017). This study, conducted at California State University, San Bernardino, investigated the clinical efficacy of artifact-corrected neurofeedback as a treatment to help veterans suffering from PTSD. The success rate found in this study matched the first line of treatment for PTSD (i.e., anti-depressant medication) which typically results in substantial benefits as high as 60 percent (Berger et al., 2009).
The clinical interventions used in this study were provided by Dr. Connie McReynolds, director of the CSUSB neurofeedback clinics, and her staff.
