“More Than a Word,” a timely documentary that examines the use of Native American-based sports mascots and the campaign to change the mascot of the National Football League team in Washington, D.C., will be shown at Cal State San Bernardino’s John M. Pfau Library on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

The free film showing, which begins at noon in room PL-5005 of the Pfau Library and is open to the public, will be followed by a discussion facilitated by James Fenelon, CSUSB professor of sociology and director of the Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies.

Parking at CSUSB is $6.

“More Than A Word,” which was released in September, analyzes the Washington NFL team and its “use of the derogatory term R*dskins,” according to the film’s synopsis. “Using interviews from both those in favor of changing the name and those against, ‘More Than A Word’ presents a deeper analysis of the many issues surrounding the Washington team name. The documentary also examines the history of Native American cultural appropriation.”

Fenelon has also weighed in on the controversy. In 2016, his book, “Redskins? Sports Mascots, Indian Nations and White Racism,” was published. Like the documentary film, Fenelon’s book examines the controversy involving the Washington professional football team’s use of a Native American mascot as a window into other debates about the use of such mascots for college and professional sports teams.
