Cal State San Bernardino’s Department of Theatre Arts and the Ellen Weisser Endowed Theatre Showcase closes out the 2016-2017 theatre season in June with “The World Goes ‘Round,” a musical revue spanning the musical career of the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb forged one of the most successful and longest-running partnerships in American musical theater history, lasting more than three decades. From their first Broadway musical “Flora, The Red Menace,” to “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” and “Cabaret,” to films including “Funny Lady,” and “New York, New York,” the duo’s sharp wit and theatricality truly set them apart from their contemporaries.
Directed by professor Kathryn Ervin, “The World Goes ‘Round” is a true celebration of Kander and Ebb, seamlessly weaving song and dance selections from some of their most renowned musicals — ”Chicago” (“All That Jazz,” “Mr. Cellophane”); “Cabaret” (“Maybe This Time,” “Cabaret”); “New York, New York” (“There Goes the Ballgame,” “New York, New York”) — into a stunning theatrical piece. Each selection delves into the world of specific characters, with segments that transition effortlessly from one to the next.
The curtain rises on “The World Goes ‘Round” June 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10 at 8 p.m., with matinee performances on June 4, 10 and 11 at 2 p.m.
