Javier Torner, director of Information Security & Emerging Technologies at Cal State San Bernardino, was honored as an outstanding contributor in technology at the Cal State 2019 Tech Conference on July 30 in San Diego.
“It is a humbling experience to be recognized by peers and collaborators in the CSU,” Torner said. “I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with many exceptional individuals at my campus and at the other CSUs and the Chancellor’s office, who to a greater extent, made the contributions of technology possible.”
Torner, who will retire this August, began his tenure at CSUSB in 1985 as a professor of physics. According to the nomination letter, “With a specialty in high energy and computational physics, Javier made a natural transition to administration and was an integral and part of the early days of computing at the university.”
“We are very proud of Javier’s incredible work and dedication to the university and to the CSU as a system,” said Samuel Sudhakar, vice president and chief information officer of CSUSB’s Information Technologies Services. “This award is a tribute to his years of service and contributions both in the classroom and to ITS, and the Information Security Community across our state.”
Torner has been committed to the development of technology at the California State University system-wide level. He has participated and held leadership positions in NTA, the Directories Working Group, Identity and Access Management, The Information Technology – Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC), and a number of working groups, ad hoc committees and pilot projects.
He has also demonstrated leadership to organizations outside the CSU including Educause, Cyber Watch West and the Inland Empire ISSA. He has also been featured on the radio and has videos on YouTube where he talks about information security and the CSUSB Apple Podcasts.
“Sometimes it seems like everyone in IT knows Javier. His personality is a big as his accomplishments,” says the nomination letter. “Dr. Javier Torner is appreciated for being a thoughtful leader, intellectual and tenacious problem solver … In addition to his many professional accomplishments, he is an amazing man, role model and friend we can only hope to emulate.”
“It has been a unique and wonderful experience to have been in the CSU at a time when we experienced, and continue to experience, an unprecedented explosion in technology fueling the creativity and innovation for its use in support of the educational mission of the CSU as it’s been demonstrated by the presentations at this conference,” Torner said.
In addition to Torner’s recognition, the Immersive Media & Learning Lab at CSUSB received a silver award during the conference in the category Innovation in Teaching, Learning and/or Accessibility.
