CSUSB professor comments on NYC’s new executive director of the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes
The Times of Israel
Sept. 4, 2019
Brian Levin, professor of criminal justice and director of the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino, called Deborah Lauter, the new executive director of the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes in New York City, a “gem.” Levin said Lauter has “extensive experience with regard to prejudice of all types. She has been a resource for people, not only in the ADL, but overall in our profession, relating to prejudice reduction and crimes.”
The Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office of Criminal Justice. In announcing in June that it would open this summer — months ahead of the November date established by the City Council — de Blasio said the city “rejects any attempt to hate or divide” and that the new office would “work to root out hate and make our streets safer.”

CSUSB professor asked about owner of controversial website 8Chan
NBC News
September 4, 2019
Brian Levin, criminal justice professor and the head of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, was asked about Jim Watkins, the owner of the controversial website 8Chan, which “became a dumping ground for white nationalist manifestos shortly before race-based terror attacks.” Watkins is scheduled to be questioned as part of a closed-door session with the House Homeland Security Committee.
Levin said that he would have some specific questions for Watkins if he had the opportunity to pose them.
“What laws do you think you’re bound by? What are your concerns over civil liberties? Would you feel comfortable testifying in public?” Levin said.
