CSUSB professor discusses how COVID-19 is affecting SB County’s Latino community

Enrique Murillo, executive director of the Latino Education and Advocacy Days Organization at California State University, San Bernardino, was interviewed for an article on how Latinos lead all ethnic groups with the most cases of recorded COVID-19 in San Bernardino County.
Murillo said economic disparities go hand in hand with health vulnerabilities of Latinos.
“Many Latinos are shouldering a disproportionate burden of the pandemic,” said Murillo. “Though not because they aren’t taking personal responsibility. It is more closely related to income and access, not anything genetic.
“Latinos are ill-prepared for their battle against the coronavirus and thus are among the worst hit by the crisis,” said Murillo. “Many lack or have insufficient health insurance. Some are wary of seeking medical care due to costs.”
According to Murillo, Latinos have the highest uninsured rate of any racial or ethnic group in the United States.

IE manufacturing continues to sink, CSUSB report shows

The purchasing managers index for the fourth month of the year was 41.8, down from 43.3 in March and well below the 50 benchmark that determines if manufacturing is growing or shrinking, according to the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino.
How bad was last month’s index? It’s only been lower eight time since the institute began publishing it in 1993, and most of those instances were during the Great Recession of 2007-2008.
April’s index was expected given the extraordinary circumstances brought on by the Coronavirus, said Barbara Sirotnik, institute director and co-author of the monthly report.
“Considering the pandemic ravaging the world, it’s not a surprise that the PMI would be as low as it is,” Sirotnik said in the report. “Non-essential businesses have been shuttered, and residents in most states have been ordered to stay home.”

Committee chaired by CSUSB professor emeritus directs funds to Ethiopia’s COVID-19 fight

The Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund, chaired by Alemayehu G. Mariam, CSUSB professor emeritus, political science, said that it has procured Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) and related medical supplies worth $1.173 million U.S. to safeguard the well-being of frontline health personnel working to save lives across Ethiopia in the campaign against COVID-19.
Mariam said Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund is doing everything possible to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic impact in Ethiopia.
“We allocated USD 1 million initial start-up from the EDTF ongoing fund and mobilized an additional USD 130 thousand to-date under a new EDTF COVID-19 Mitigation subaccount,” he added.
