A panel of students, faculty, staff and guest experts will lead a conversation on “Race and Policing” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, on Zoom.

The panel discussion and conversation comes in the aftermath of the death of a Minneapolis, Minn., man in police custody. A video of the incident posted on social media – the man, George Floyd, is black and the officer is white – has led to widespread protests, the firing of four police officers, and the arrest of one officer on a third-degree murder charge.

The incident is the latest in which race and policing have become a source of major debates, if not flashpoints for protests.

“Race and Policing” will include issues related to racism, racial violence, police brutality, and their impact on the community. Panelists will include staff, students, faculty, and campus guests, and topics will range from institutional racism and history, to community responses to police violence, and campus psychological and counseling support resources.

The panelists are:

  • Mary Texeira, professor of sociology;
  • Marc Robinson, assistant professor of history; 
  • Sid Crudup II, an author and educator;
  • Julian Lowe, pastor of Oasis Church in Los Angeles;
  • Marlo Brooks and Kameron Pyant, students at CSUSB; and
  • Hattie McNutt (M.S., LMFT), a counselor in the CSUSB Counseling and Psychological Services.  

Charlene Eaton, CSUSB adjunct instructor and doctoral candidate (Claremont Graduate University), will moderate.
