Dear CSUSB Community,
We are deeply grateful for The Supreme Court of the United States’ (SCOTUS) decision rejecting the rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for close to 700,000 DACA recipients. However, the Court ruling is based solely on procedural grounds, which means that DACA remains vulnerable. CSUSB is a committed supporter of all DACA-eligible students, faculty and staff and all members of the undocumented community. We will continue to provide resources, guidance and support services.
Nearly 27% or 3 million of all undocumented immigrants in the United States reside in California. They are key members of our communities who contribute to our economy and help build a better future for our state and nation. DACA recipients play critical roles through their jobs in healthcare, education and other essential worker positions. Our DACA students are part of building that better tomorrow and vital to the number of college-educated California residents we will need in order to move our state forward.
This SCOTUS decision allows the CSU to continue providing access to education and state financial aid for DACA recipients. CSU enrollment and tuition policies, as well as state funding available under the California Dream Act, are not based on DACA status and will not change. In addition, state financial aid will continue to be available to DACA recipients who qualify. Students can continue to access programs on their campus that offer a variety of support. Additionally, many non-profit organizations offer scholarships and other financial assistance to undocumented students.
The CSU provides access to resources including free immigration legal services, mental health services, Dream Centers and DACA updates on the Resources for Undocumented Students website. Today (Friday, June 19) at 12:00 p.m., the Undocumented Student Success Center, in partnership with the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), will host a DACA De-brief: What It All Means on Zoom. For more information contact DREAMERS@csusb.edu.
Next Wednesday, June 24, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., the CSU, in partnership with the California Community Colleges and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, will be hosting a webinar to discuss the impact of the ruling. The webinar will be open to all who are interested and will be promoted to students, staff and faculty once the registration information is released. Details about the webinar will also be posted on the Resources for Undocumented Students website.
UndocuYoties, while this ruling is a positive step forward, it is an incomplete one. Please know that CSUSB remains committed to the continued success of our DACA students, faculty and staff and other undocumented members of our campus community —and their families—in securing permanent relief for these aspiring Americans. We invite you to join us today to urge Congress to take swift, bipartisan legislative action so that our undocumented communities can continue to fulfill their human potential and contribute to our campuses and our society.
