Cal State San Bernardino has again been named among the top universities in the western region and in the United States, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2021 rankings of top colleges and universities.

CSUSB was listed as:

  • Best Regional Universities in the West, 40th;
  • Top Public Schools Regional Universities West, 18th;
  • Social Mobility Regional Universities West; 11th;
  • Best Value - Regional Universities West, 21st;  and
  • Best Undergraduate Engineering programs in the nation that don’t offer doctorate degrees, 91st.

“This is truly gratifying to know that Cal State San Bernardino is listed among the top universities in the West,” said CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales. “I never tire of saying it, but recognitions such as these are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our amazing faculty and staff, who strive to create an unparalleled educational experience that will help our students succeed academically and beyond.”

U.S. News & World Report rankings are considered one of the most influential and anticipated recognitions for colleges and universities that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s degree programs throughout the United States.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings will be listed in the 2021 Best Colleges guidebook, which will be released in late October. The West region includes institutions from 15 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The rankings are available at the U.S. News website at usnews.com/colleges.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on several key measures of quality that include:

  • Outcomes such as retention and graduation rates, graduating students who received federal Pell Grants;
  • Faculty resources, such as class size, faculty salary, the proportion of full-time faculty with the highest degree in their fields, student faculty ratio, and the proportion of faculty who are full time;
  • Expert opinion such as surveys of presidents, provosts and deans of admissions, peer assessments and high school counselor assessments;
  • Financial resources such as spending per student;
  • Student excellence such as standardized tests and high school standing; and
  • Alumni giving.

Along with the overall rankings and for the first time since 2003, U.S. News ranked schools on the following programs that have been proven to enhance learning outcomes and a student’s academic experience:

  • Learning Communities
  • Senior Capstone
  • Service Learning
