CSUSB professor writes, ‘One year in quarantine: How have we changed?’

CSUSB professor discusses latest tensions between Iran and Israel

David Yaghoubian, CSUSB professor of history, was interviewed for a segment on the Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations responding in a letter to what is perceived as “provocative and warmongering rhetoric” against Iran. The letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres from Iran’s UN Ambassasdor Majid Takht-Ravanchi came a week after an Israeli-owned cargo ship said it had been crippled by a suspected blast while it was in the Sea of Oman, claiming that it suffered holes in both sides of its hull. and putting responsibility for it on Iran, which denied any wrongdoing.

Yaghoubian said Israel is “trying to gin up a war between the United State and Iran. We’ve heard bellicose, threatening statements from the defense minister, from the chief of staff, and basically, beyond the blatant fact that this is clear violation of Article 2 of the United Nations charter, it’s clear that Israel is interested in killing off the JCPOA if possible, or prohibiting the Biden administration from returning to it.”

Yaghoubian was referring to the section in the UN charter that states members “refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” and the multi-national nuclear agreement with Iran, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
