Cal State San Bernardino will hold its annual Research Week on April 12-16, celebrating the research and scholarly achievements of faculty and students across campus including the Meeting of the Minds Student Research Symposium.
Research Week will be again held virtually by CSUSB due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Meeting of the Minds will be held on Thursday, April 15, from 11:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. with more than 140 students from the university’s five colleges presenting their research and creative work. The opening ceremony will feature keynote speaker Azizi Seixas, an assistant professor at NYU Langone Health, in the Department of Population Health and Department of Psychiatry on the topic “Re-imagining Healthcare for All- Technology, Inequity, and the Healthcare Gap.”

Seixas’ research broadly focuses on three areas: 1) multilevel determinants of sleep, brain and mental health, aging, and cardiovascular disease disparities, 2) long-term health consequences of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mental health disparities, and 3) developing adaptive, group-tailored, and personalized behavior modification interventions, with the use of machine learning analytical tools and translational artificial intelligence, to improve health and well-being.
Seixas is recognized as one of the top 100 Inspiring Black Scientists in America by Cell Press. He has more than 100 high-impact, peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and conference presentations, and his work appears in a number of news media outlets such as CBS, CNN, NBC, the Associated Press, The Guardian, The Huffington Post, and he is the sleep expert for NBC Health News.

Monday, April 12, 10-11 a.m. “Get the Scoop: Getting Involved in Research Panel.” The Coyote Scholars Club will host a panel of graduate and undergraduate students that are involved in research on campus to share their experiences and discuss how they got involved with research at CSUSB.

Monday, April 12, noon-2 p.m. Faculty/Staff Book Launch. The Office of Graduate Studies will hold its bi-annual Faculty & Staff Book Launch, which highlights faculty and staff who have published academic text in the last two years.

Tuesday, April 13, 4-5 p.m. Recognition of Principal Investigators. The Principal Investigator’s Reception is held to honor faculty who have been engaged in extramural grant activities.
The reception keynote speaker is Cynthia Crawford, a professor of psychology in the CSUSB Department of Psychology and recipient of the 2021 Wang Family Excellence Award. Crawford’s topic is “Age matters: Developmental Differences in Drug Responsivity.”
Crawford has helped advance the university’s research and grant capacities with grant awards growing from $5.5 million in 1996-97 to $42 million in 2019-20. To attend, RSVP at the PI Reception registration site.
Wednesday, April 14, noon-1 p.m. Keynote speaker Troy Williams will talk on “The Significance of Your Perspective.” Williams, a community-based program evaluator for the Population Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, brings a wealth of experience in entrepreneurship, community engagement, and higher education.
His current research explores the human ecological conditions that influence the ways Black residents in Dane County experience the opioid crisis. More specifically, his work considers how increased access to Black public spaces, Black organizations, and Black information networks can be used to combat social barriers that have led to opioid misuse, treatment inequity, and Black criminalization.

Thursday, April 15, 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. The 10th Annual Meeting of the Minds Research Symposium.
CSUSB graduate and undergraduate students from the academic colleges will have the opportunity to showcase their research and creative activities to the campus and broader community. The information to login to the symposium will be available on April 15.

Friday, April 16, noon-1 p.m. Recognition of Faculty Mentors and Student Researchers. A luncheon will be held to honor the faculty who mentor students and acknowledge the students for their achievements in research and creative activities.
