“Women of the Americas: Feminism, Diaspora and Violence” will be the focus of the annual Latin American Studies Conference: Study of the Americas at Cal State San Bernardino on April 22-23.

Envisioning women as an inclusive category that include transgender, gender fluid, and intersectional identities, the virtual conference will examine colonial/decolonial histories across places and temporalities that affect women, as well as more broader issues related to Latin America.

The first day of the conference, April 22, will feature three keynotes speakers:

  • 10-10:50 a.m.: Milagros de la Torre, a New York-based artist working with a conceptional approach to the photographic medium. Her images involve critical research on the history and technical procedures of the photographic, and examine representations of trauma, its residual effect on the individual, and the structures of remembrance.
  • 11-11:50 a.m: Willivaldo Delgadillo, fiction writer and academic, was born in Los Angeles, but grew up in Juarez, Mexico. He considers himself binational and bicultural. Delgadillo lives in Juarez and teaches in the department of language and linguistics at the University of Texas, El Paso. He has published several novels and books on topics that include silent cinema and the border.
  • Noon-12:50 p.m.: Rosa Marta Zárate, a musician and popular organizer. “La Senora Del Canto” Zarate has successfully combined her rich musical talent with courageous leadership in championing the rights of the Mexican and Latino community in the United States. She has held concerts in Central and South America as well as in Portugal and the United States.

The second day, April 23, will include a panel discussion:

  • 10-11:30 a.m. – Latin American Studies minor at CSUSB: Meet the Professors! Join a faculty panel session with Eric Bayruns Garcia, an assistant professor of philosophy; Ed Gomez, an associate professor of art and design; Florencia San Martín, an assistant professor of art history and global cultures; and Mike Kohout, a professor of geography and environmental studies.
