Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will be closed on Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day.

Both campuses will reopen and virtual classes will resume on Tuesday, June 1. University Police will remain on duty on all days when the campus is closed.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the university has temporarily suspended all non-essential on-campus operations, and classes have been conducted in a virtual environment. Stay up to date on the university’s latest safety measures at the COVID-19/Coronavirus Information webpage.

Summer session classes, most of which are being held virtually, begin on Wednesday, June 2.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May each year. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day due to the practice of decorating the graves of soldiers in remembrance of their sacrifice while serving in the nation’s armed services.

One of the first official Memorial Day proclamations was made in 1868 by Gen. John Logan, who was serving as commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. This began the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of all the Union and Confederate service members at Arlington National Cemetery.
