The Department of Communication Studies at Cal State San Bernardino, in partnership with Students for Justice in Palestine, has assembled a group of professionals who utilize public speaking skills in their day-to-day work, including NBC4’s Beverly White as the keynote speaker.

The event, “The Power of Communication in the Community,” aims to display the practical aspects of public speaking in careers, and is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 16, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Santos Manuel Student Union, Room 106 AB. White has nearly four decades of journalism experience. She is well-known for her work covering the COVID-19 pandemic, protests in response to the killing of George Floyd, and mass shootings and natural disasters across Southern California. Her work has earned her many awards, including the National Association of Black Journalists Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018, the Kappa Tau Alpha Leadership Award in 2017, the Society of Professional Journalists’ Distinguished Journalist Award in 2012, and the California Legislative Black Caucus Leadership Award in 2008.

The event will also feature Larry R. Hygh Jr., CSUSB full-time lecturer and internship coordinator in the communication studies department, and Theo Mazumdar, CSUSB assistant professor of communication studies.

Before coming to  CSUSB, Hygh worked as the senior communications manager for the Black AIDS Institute. Hygh also worked as a chief communications officer for the United Methodist Church for more than20 years. Throughout all of this experience, he has accumulated a plethora of knowledge in public relations and strategic communication.

Mazumdar’s work focuses on digital culture and its influence on strategic and political communication. His writings and research have been published in “Place Branding and Public Diplomacy” and “Equid Novi: African Journalism Studies” to name a few.

After hearing about the experiences and responsibilities of the speakers, attendees will have a broader understanding of how communication and public speaking can be utilized in their future careers and in their community.
