The Campaign for College Opportunity has named Cal State San Bernardino a 2021 Equity Champion for Higher Education for Excellence in Transfer for Black and Latinx Students.
CSUSB, which was recognized for its work in supporting and increasing Black and Latinx students through the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT), was among the colleges and universities honored on Nov. 16 during the virtual Champions of Higher Education for Excellence Transfer Awards ceremony.
“On behalf of California State University, San Bernardino, I am deeply appreciative of the honor of being recognized as one of the 2021 Equity Champions for Higher Education,” CSUSB Tomás D. Morales said during the event, noting that the university has been working hard to increase ADT enrollments and ensuring the academic success of transfer students. “Here at CSUSB we say that ‘We Define the Future.’ Please know that we do not intend to rest on our laurels. Today’s results only serve as the foundation for tomorrow’s achievements.”
CSUSB was one of 11 colleges and universities recognized in the Transfer for Black and Latinx Students category. The virtual celebration brought together attendees representing California’s higher education leadership, elected officials, corporate sponsors, and civic and business leaders.
According to an email from Michele Siqueiros, president of the Campaign for College Opportunity, which announced the award, the percentage point gap (PPG) identifies campuses that are excelling in enrolling Latinx and Black students, with an ADT relative to their campus-wide ADT enrollment rates.
“The PPG tells us when campuses are acting with intentionality to enroll Black and Latinx ADT earners,” Siqueiros said. “Across all California State Universities, your campus ensured that a high proportion of transfer-seeking Black and Latinx students enrolled on a guaranteed pathway to a bachelor’s degree in the 2019-2020 academic year. This is a tremendous achievement and the real work of equity.”
