CSUSB professor’s column: ‘The Loneliness of Online Dating: Does It Really Work?’

Anthony Silard, associate professor of public administration, wrote the fourth installment of his eight-part series on the idea of convenience and how it has affected interpersonal relationships. This week he wrote on whether the convenience of online dating can lead to meaningful relationships.

He wrote, in part, “You can say a lot of things about dating in the digital age, but one thing is certain: Putting yourself out there to meet that special someone is more ‘convenient’ now. When you are cycling through hundreds of possible mates on Tinder, there is no denying that it is a convenient way to meet people. Yet are you meeting quality people?

“If you are lucky, you are. Many times, though, people’s virtual personas are markedly different from who they are in person.” While meeting people online can be helpful, Silard wrote, there is no substitute for developing relationships in person.
