“Optimizing Equity Through Big Data” is the topic of a via live video conference on Tuesday, April 19, by the Regional Mobility Dialogue Series of the Leonard Transportation Center at Cal State San Bernardino. This session, the second of six new dialogues for 2022, is set for 8-10 a.m..

Attendees will hear from transportation industry thought leaders about how to better understand transportation equity through the use of big data.

Speakers in this session are:

  • Christopher Tzeng – program manager, Western Riverside Council of Governments
  • Darin Welch – national geospatial and virtual engagement manager, HNTB Corp.
  • LTC Student Research Team – Holly Chea, MBA program, CSUSB; Preston Reed, computer science, University of California, Riverside; and Sheng Tan, civil engineering, Cal Poly  Pomona.

Big data can play a significant role in transportation equity, from identifying new opportunities for efficiency to supporting increased inclusiveness for communities and stakeholders.

Several organizations in the region – including transit agencies, the private sector and local government – have been working to address transportation equity issues. In the quest to better understand underlying equity issues and impacts of activities, an increasing number of these agencies and businesses are embracing the possibilities and opportunities offered through the use of big data.

Since big data, AI and intelligent technologies emerged, many positive changes have occurred in the transportation industry. Stakeholders throughout the system can better identify the underlying issues and more clearly see the impacts of decisions being made by transportation agencies, businesses and individuals.

Following presentations, attendees will engage in a discussion with an opportunity to share concerns and ideas with panelists, transportation professionals, policy makers, students and each other. Transportation experts from the platinum sponsors will facilitate this discussion and bring their experience and expertise to benefit the dialogue.

The series, now in its fifth year, focuses on topics relevant to the future of transportation in the Inland Empire.

The Leonard Transportation Center (LTC) at California State University, San Bernardino opened in 2006 with a focus on regional transportation needs.
