CSUSB faculty members direct two comedies staged at Barnes Theatre

Cal State San Bernardino’s theater arts department is presenting two plays in repertory through May 15 at the Ronald E. Barnes Theatre on the Cal State campus.
The plays are a futuristic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedy “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” and “Lucky Stiff,” a musical comedy with books and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty.
Professor Tom Provenzano directs “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” the story of Valentine, who travels from the barren, desert world of Verona to escape his humdrum life, leaving his best friend Proteus behind. Proteus soon follows, leaving his betrothed, Julia, who, disguised as a man named Sebastian, is not far behind.
Professor Kathryn Ervin directs “Lucky Stiff,” a murder mystery parody with mistaken identities, $6 million in diamonds and a corpse in a wheelchair.
In the play, Harry Witherspoon is an English shoe salesman who stands to inherit a fortune if he can pass his recently murdered uncle off as alive while on a vacation to Monte Carlo. If he succeeds, all his troubles vanish; if he fails, the money goes to the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn or his uncle’s gun-toting ex.
