Conner Moyer, a new incoming student to Cal State San Bernardino, wasted no time.
Accompanied by his parents and sister, the computer science major from Santee in San Diego County quickly pushed a cart containing his gear from the university parking lot to his new digs in the student residential housing as part of the university’s Fall 2022 Move-In.
“I’m just moving in,” said a smiling Moyer, who had been given the directions and key to his housing.
His mother, Stacey Moyer, said the move was “both exciting and scary seeing her son going off into the university.”
What helped in the move was knowing that the university was “doing a lot to support the students,” said Stacey Moyer, who added that when the family first visited the CSUSB campus in April, they learned about the various programs, clubs and university initiative to help and benefit students.
CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales greeted the Moyers, welcoming them to campus, and offered his thanks to the student volunteers who were working the welcome stations at the parking lot.
“I really appreciate your efforts, your smiles and enthusiasm,” Morales told the student volunteers. “You’re the first university contact that our (incoming) students see. Thank you.”
Jon Merchant, the director of the CSUSB Department of Housing & Residential Education (DHRE), said the check-in was working more rapidly and more efficiently thanks to the student volunteers along with spreading it out over a four-day period instead of in previous years when the move-in was done in one day.
As of Friday afternoon, 500 students had already moved in that day. On Thursday, about 600 students had moved in, Merchant said. The rest of the students would be expected to move in on Saturday and Sunday.
A beaming Merchant said the university had nearly double the amount of students moving in over previous years when the COVID-19 pandemic severely limited access to the university and housing.
The move-in was done through staggered appointments as the residential students moved into Coyote Village, Arrowhead Village and University Village.
All residents had to indicate via the COVID-19 Self-Certification that they have received the COVID-19 booster shot or have a medical/religious exemption. Merchant added that the department also encouraged all residents to test prior to arriving to campus.
In addition, the DHRE and the Residence Halls Association (RHA) sponsored several events during Move-In Welcome Week that included Move-In Goodies to help the students stay cool and hydrated during the move-in, a pool day, an outdoor movie night, and Sunday brunch for the students and their families.
Also included for the student residents was a Kick-Off Breakfast for the first day of classes. The breakfasts were held at village-specific locations where the students could pick up a free to-go breakfast and some academic success tips from each of the villages and academic mentors.
