Stranger Things
The Physiologist Magazine
September 2022
In this feature: “Heidy Contreras, PhD, who moved this summer from her associate professor of biology position at the University of LaVerne, in LaVerne, Calif., to work at California State University, San Bernardino, chose early in her career to study insects. She began with fruit flies, beetles and moths and then settled on hissing cockroaches.
“‘Insects are invaluable,’ she says. ‘They provide so many services, ecological services, that we don’t even think about. Like cockroaches—they’re scavengers and they go in and clean up our environment without us even thinking about it. … They’re really important in all sorts of ecosystems.’”
Not mentioned in the article, Contreras is a CSUSB alumna.
CSUSB professor refutes idea that white supremacy threat is overblown
The Washington Times
Sept. 14, 2022
An article critical of President Joe Biden’s emphasis on the threat of white supremacists included an interview with Brian Levin, director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, who attended the White House’s United We Stand Summit addressing hate crimes and extremism on Sept. 15.
Nationwide hate crime data points to a concerning rise in racially motivated attacks in recent years, said Levin, who founded the center and has been appointed to California’s recently formed Commission on the State of Hate. Levin, an independent, said White supremacist ideology consistently motivates the deadliest hate-fueled attacks. He noted a concerning rise in online extremism among White supremacist groups.
