Business operations at Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will be closed Friday, March 31, in observance of the state holiday commemorating the birthday of the late labor leader César Chávez.

The holiday falls during the university’s spring break of the spring semester; no classes are in session March 27-31. However, except for the holiday, all campus administrative offices are operating throughout the week.

Also, on Saturday, April 1, the university will be the site of the 12th annual César E. Chávez Memorial Breakfast, presented by the Chicano Latino Caucus of San Bernardino County and the Latino Education & Advocacy Days at CSUSB. Ron Estrada, CEO of Washington, D.C.,-based Farmworker Justice, will be the keynote speaker. Also scheduled to speak is Flor Martinez, founder and president of The Celebration Nation Foundation, a San Jose-based nonprofit organization focused on helping the indigenous and Latino community. 

University business offices will reopen, and spring semester classes will resume, on Monday, April 3.

University Police will remain on duty on all days when the campus is closed.

Former California Gov. Gray Davis signed legislation in 2002 making Chávez’s birthday a state holiday to promote service to the communities of California in honor of the late labor leader’s life and work.
