CSUSB professor cowrote article on GOP candidates' portrayal of their masculinity
FiveThirtyEight
Aug. 1, 2023
Meredith Conroy, CSUSB associate professor of political science, cowrote an article on how Republican male candidates have been trying to portray their masculinity. She and FiveThirtyEight senior reporter, Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux, wrote: “This contest to out-macho each other might seem over the top. Women candidates do it too — just watch former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s announcement video, where she says, ‘when you kick back, it hurts them more if you are wearing heels.’”

Journal of Organizational Sociology
Ethel Mickey (sociology) was one of the coauthors of a study that “shows how formal policies and awareness of inequalities may still fail to produce change.” In the abstract, the authors wrote: “Findings focus on three common shared decisions: committee service, hiring/promotion, and voting practices. We find awareness of inequality may actually reinforce the status quo when narratives about gendered and racialized processes feature decoupling from formal bylaws, and when narratives about outcomes relate to multiple layers of unanticipated consequences favoring whiteness and men.”
