Trump skipping first GOP debate opened door for other candidates

Meredith Conroy, CSUSB associate professor of political science, participated in a chat with FiveThirtyEight staff and contributors to weigh the effect of Donald Trump skipping the Republican Party’s first debate for candidates vying for the party’s nomination for president.

She said that by Trump sitting out, “it opened the door for the other candidates to take up more space and attack him without rebuttal (although entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy seemed eager to play the role of Trump defender). But I’d be looking at it and think I am a little worse off after the debate. Not only because polls like the one FiveThirtyEight did with Ipsos, conducted using Ipsos’s KnowledgePanel, shows this (the share of debate watchers considering him declined by about 5 percentage points), but also because other candidates are in the news cycle and gaining name recognition and credibility.”

CSUSB center report: African Americans remain top target of hate crime

A new report from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino shows that Black people were the targets of more than one-fifth of all hate crimes reported in major U.S. cities last year, the highest share of any group.

"Blacks remain the most frequent target not only for these extremist killers but have been the most frequent target for overall hate crime for every year since data has been collected, right up through our partial 2023 totals," said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism and the lead author of the report.
