Welcome to the thrilling world of theater at California State University, San Bernardino, as the Department of Theatre Arts embarks on an exciting journey through the 2023-24 season. This year promises to captivate and entertain audiences with an impressive lineup of performances, including the timeless “Murder on the Orient Express” and the beloved musical “Pippin.” Under the leadership of the new department chair, André Harrington, and amidst the anticipation of a brand new Performing Arts Center, this season is set to be a true spectacle!

We open the season with Agatha Christie’s iconic, “Murder on the Orient Express,” which will transport audiences to a world of mystery and intrigue from Nov. 10-19. This Ken Ludwig adaptation of the classic novel, directed by Frank Mihelich, follows the famous detective, Hercule Poirot, as he investigates a murder on the luxurious Orient Express locomotive. With its intricate plot, captivating characters and unexpected twists, “Murder on the Orient Express” promises to keep theatergoers on the edge of their seats.

In spring 2024, the Ronald E. Barnes stage will come alive with the Tony Award-winning musical, “Pippin,” book by Roger O. Hirson, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. This enchanting production, running from April 26 to May 5, takes audiences on a magical journey following the titular character, Pippin, as he searches for meaning and fulfillment in life. Filled with dazzling choreography, unforgettable songs and a compelling storyline, “Pippin” promises to be a feast for the senses and a celebration of the human spirit.

Adding to the excitement of this season is the arrival of a new department chair. With a wealth of experience and a passion for the performing arts, Harrington, who is also a CSUSB professor of theatre arts, brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to CSUSB. His leadership and commitment to fostering artistic excellence will undoubtedly elevate CSUSB’s theatre arts program and provide enriching experiences for both students and patrons.

The theatre arts department also welcomes new assistant professor Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez, who adds his unique voice and over 20 years of theater experience to our pool of talented faculty.

Furthermore, we are delighted to update the community on the ongoing construction of the new Performing Arts Center on campus. This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for creativity and artistic expression, providing our talented students with enhanced resources and performance spaces. As we eagerly anticipate the completion of this remarkable venue, it underscores our commitment to the performing arts in the Inland Empire and ensures a bright future for the theatre arts program – and performing arts as a whole – at CSUSB.

Tickets can be purchased from the CSUSB Theatre Arts Box Office or online at theatre.csusb.edu. Ticket prices are $6 for students and individuals under 17; $12 for faculty, staff, senior citizens and military/first responders; $15 for adults 18-64.

All performances take place in the Ronald E. Barnes Theatre on the CSUSB campus. Parking at CSUSB is $6 Monday-Friday and $3 on the weekend.
