Hate crimes targeting Latinos are increasing (in Spanish)

The Spanish-language newscast included research by the CSUSB Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism that pointed to an increase in hate crimes in the U.S.’s 10 largest cities from 2021 to 2022, with average increases of 22%.
“Anti-Latino hate crimes hit a modern record,” said Brian Levin, the center’s founding director. “What we found in 2021 was significant increases in hate crimes against the Latino community.”
The segment also included the findings of La Raza Database Research Project, housed at CSUSB’s Latino Education and Advocacy Days Project. "I was used to responding to cases, for example, of street vendors attacked by the police, that the police came and threw their food at them or took away their carts, their merchandise. Not anymore, now most of the attacks come from other people, other people," explains Ivette Xochiyotl Boyzo, activist and researcher with La Raza Database Project.

Concern over threat of attacks on U.S. as conflict escalates in Gaza and Israel

Brian Levin, founding director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, was interviewed for a segment about the FBI director’s statement to Congress that threats against the U.S. are growing as the conflict escalates in Gaza and Israel. Levin called for vigilance, especially as hate crimes against Muslims and Jews are increasing in the Los Angeles area.
