Civil Rights and Black Power movements scholar to speak at MLK celebration

Researcher, author, teacher, and Washington State University alumus Marc Robinson, a CSUSB assistant professor of history, will give the keynote speech at this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18 in the CUB Sr. Ballroom and on YouTube.

Robinson teaches courses on African American and U.S. history. He is also a visiting fellow in equity, justice, and inclusion at the University of Oregon’s Clark Honors College. His research focuses on the Civil Rights and Black Power movements in the Pacific Northwest. Robinson received his doctoral degree from WSU in American Studies in 2012.

He is the author of the recently published book, “Washington State Rising: Black Power on Campus in the Pacific Northwest,” which places the Pacific Northwest within debates about the Civil Rights Movement.

Inland Southern California’s location along the path of goods movement – with proximity to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, major highways, and railways – continues to make efficient transportation important to local governments.

James Fenelon (sociology), director of the CSUSB Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies, was the featured speaker at the Jan. 11 UCLA Sociology Colloquium Series event, where his talk centered on his latest book, “Indian, Black and Irish: Indigenous Nations, African Peoples, European Invasions, 1492-1790.” His talk was titled, “500 Years of Racial Supremacy, Sovereignty, and Survivance.”

Obituary: Everett A. Sheffield, 83

Everett Allan Sheffield, who retired from professorship of 30 years at California State University in San Bernardino, Calif., died at the age of 83. He will be honored at a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 3, at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home in Kalispell, Mont. Not mentioned in the article, Sheffield was the former chair of the industrial technology department.
