Registration is now open for the 2024 California State University (CSU) Symposium on Teaching and Learning: RECONNECT, set for Feb. 23-24 in-person and March 1 virtually, with the in-person sessions (the first since 2019) taking place at Cal State San Bernardino.
The CSU Symposium on Teaching and Learning, also known as “SoTL,” is sponsored by CSU Innovative Teaching and Learning Programs and the CSU Faculty Development Council.
SoTL brings together educators from all 23 CSU campuses and surrounding community colleges. The aim is for participants to share research findings, pedagogical innovations, and evidence-based, culturally sustaining practices for reaching and teaching our diverse student body.
Participants can register online at the Symposium on Teaching and Learning: RECONNECT webpage. Registration fees are $40 for in-person attendees and $10 for virtual-only attendees.
The Feb. 23 sessions begin with check-in at 11:30 a.m.; the Feb. 24 session check-in opens at 8 a.m. Most of the sessions will be at the university’s Center for Global Innovation.
The March 1 virtual symposium begins at 9 a.m.
The SoTL agenda is available online.
Carol Hood, co-chair of the symposium and associate dean of the College of Natural Sciences, said that "student success is the CSU’s first priority and excellent teaching by our faculty is key to that success. The SoTL facilitates the sharing of innovations and best teaching practices among faculty across the CSU and with faculty from our neighboring community colleges.”
“We are thrilled and honored to bring members of the CSU faculty community together here at CSUSB for the first Symposium on Teaching and Learning since 2019, and we think the symposium will truly offer a much-needed opportunity to reconnect with colleagues from across the system,” said Bradford Owen, event co-chair and associate vice president for faculty development.
Author José Antonio Bowen, known for his works “Teaching Change: How to Develop Independent Thinkers Using Relationships, Resilience, and Reflection,” “Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning,” and the forthcoming “Teaching with AI,” will facilitate a plenary workshop titled “New Relationships and New Technologies: Teaching with AI in 2024” on Saturday, Feb. 24.
The symposium will feature presentations on various themes, including:
- culturally responsive pedagogies,
- student engagement and belonging,
- (emerging) technologies as tools for learning,
- inclusive learning assessment and outcomes, and
- CSU-UC-Community Colleges Partnerships.
Presentations will consist of posters, interactive sessions, symposium sessions, mini sessions, and virtual sessions (March 1, only).
The 2024 RECONNECT symposium is hosted by Cal State San Bernardino's Faculty Center for Excellence in conjunction with ISSUES-X, an NSF IUSE project.
