CSUSB professor comments on Democrats’ strategy emphasizing abortion to mobilize voters
Los Angeles Times
Feb. 13, 2024
Meredith Conroy, a political science professor at Cal State San Bernardino, believes abortion will be a mobilizing force, particularly among younger, more liberal voters.
“I believe young voters are least enthusiastic about a Trump/Biden rematch, but an issue like abortion could be enough to keep them engaged,” she said in an article about Democrats using abortion as an issue to mobilize voters in Orange County.
Since the Supreme Court in 2022 overturned the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision, abortion policy and the push for a federal ban on the procedure in the Republican-controlled House have been at the forefront of Democratic campaigns. But how well the issue mobilizes voters in the four Orange County-based districts that are expected to be among the nation’s most competitive in this election remains unclear.
CSUSB’s Brian Levin comments on latest report pointing to increase in antisemitism
Associated Press
Feb. 13, 2024
Brian Levin, founding director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, commented on a survey conducted by the American Jewish Committee, a prominent advocacy organization. The survey, conducted last fall just as the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, shows that a number of American Jews who say they feel less secure in the U.S. jumped 22% from last year’s survey.
Levin said he has seen a surge in anti-Jewish and Islamophobic internet searches since last fall, including “eliminationist” and homicidal language.
Levin, who is not affiliated with the AJC survey, said anti-Jewish hate crimes hit a record high last year in several major cities. “As Jews are understandably feeling more insecure, police and social science data back up why,” he said.
