CSUSB's annual Research Week will celebrate the research and scholarly achievements of alumni, faculty and students across campus in all disciplines April 8-11. Hosted by the Office of Student Research (OSR), in collaboration with academic research and graduate studies, the event is an opportunity to learn about the research and creative activities taking place on campus.

This year, CSUSB students and alumni are invited to participate in the event as presenters, and faculty and graduate students can serve as moderators and judges.

The 2024 Research Week events include:

Research Week Kickoff: Monday, April 8, noon-1 p.m., Coyote Walkway.

The Research Week kickoff will feature music, tabling, free swag and an interactive chalk art for all to enjoy. RSVP to the Research Week Kickoff.

Principal Investigator’s Reception: Monday, April 8, 4-6 p.m., Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU) South 106AB.

The Principal Investigator’s Reception is held to honor faculty and project directors engaged in extramural grant activities.

Grad Slam: Tuesday, April 9, 5-7 p.m., SMSU South Theater.

Join the Office of Graduate Studies for the university-wide Grad Slam. Students will present their graduate work in three minutes or less to a non-expert audience and a panel of community judges. The winners will be awarded prize money and move on to the CSU-side competition. RSVP to the Grand Slam.

Mellon Mays Keynote Speaker, Sylvia Zamora, “Latinos and Race Across the Border”: Wednesday, April 10, noon-1:30 p.m., online via Zoom.

Zamora is an associate professor of sociology at Loyola Marymount University hailing from Los Angeles. Her research and teaching focuses on the racialized experiences of Latinos in the U.S. and across Latin America.

Her book, “Racial Baggage: Mexican Immigrants and Race Across the Border,” examines racialization as a transnational process that not only changes immigrants themselves, but also everyday understandings of race and racism within the United States and Mexico.

In her upcoming talk, Zamora will shed light on the profound ways in which the immigration experience can reshape our understanding of race in both home and host countries. Participants attendance will broaden perspectives on these critical societal dynamics. RSVP to the Mellon Mays Keynote.

13th annual Meeting of the Minds Student Research Symposium: Thursday, April 11, 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., SMSU North (second floor) and Center for Global Intelligence.

At the Meeting of the Minds Student Research Symposium, CSUSB graduate and undergraduate students, as well as alumni, will have the opportunity to showcase their research and creative activities through oral, poster and creative presentations. Meeting of the Minds Student Research Symposium Keynote Speaker, Andrew Ramirez, “Journey as a First-Gen Queer Latino Graduate Student”: Thursday, April 11, noon-1 p.m., SMSU North Conference Room A and B (in person and online via Zoom).

Andrew Ramirez is pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in the field of bioengineering. His academic journey includes earning a master of science degree in bioengineering from UCLA and a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from UC Davis. Raised in the Inland Empire, Ramirez is a first-generation college student and the child of Mexican immigrants. He identifies as queer and is deeply committed to his studies.

In his upcoming presentation, Ramirez will share insights into his academic path, participation in diversity programs, research endeavors and his role as a mentor for aspiring scholars. OSR Recognition Reception (invite-only event): Thursday, April 18, 4-6 p.m., SMSU North Amphitheater.

The OSR Recognition Reception is held to honor faculty who mentor students and acknowledge the students for their achievements in research and creative activities.
