Apex, the largest stegosaurus fossil ever found, heads to auction

CSUSB professor of biology, Stuart Sumida, speaking in his capacity as vice president of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, was interviewed for an article about the auctioning of dinosaur fossils, which raises concerns among paleontologists. Many of them have watched fossils that may unlock scientific mysteries get steered into the hands of wealthy private collectors rather than toward research institutions in recent decades.
The stegosaurus’s potential price tag could be out of reach for many institutions, Dr. Sumida said. He said that the costs of studying an already mounted and reconstructed specimen can be higher than just the purchase price. Reconstructing and mounting fossils is as much art as science — and specific choices can be used to hoodwink the uninitiated by blurring the lines on what parts of any given bone are real.
“If the specimen is as scientifically important as it’s purported, then they’re going about it entirely the wrong way,” Dr. Sumida said.

Stuart Sumida, CSUSB professor of biology and renowned consultant in the entertainment industry, was one of the guest speakers at the Game School Expo 2024, which took place May 29-31 at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
On the second day of the conference, May 30, Sumida gave a morning keynote lecture and later led a workshop.
The INN Game School was established in 2003 as the first game education school in Norway. It is Norway’s largest game development education program, focusing on computer programming, and digital arts such as concept art, motion design, 3d-animation and 3d-visualization.
CSUSB’s Brian Levin interviewed about arrest in attack against pro-Palestinian demonstrators at UCLA

Brian Levin, founding director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, was interviewed about an arrest of a suspect in the mob attack on a pro-Palestinian protest camp at UCLA in late April. Levin commented on the delay on the arrest of additional suspects, whose attacks were captured on video. “It feels slow to me, and I think it feels slow to a lot of citizens in Los Angeles,” Levin said. “This was a horrendous attack, and if there was ever a case where I think we have to roll up as many of these assailants as possible, it's this one.”
