ADL: Antisemitic incidents hit record high in year since Oct. 7
Axios
Oct. 6, 2024
The United States has experienced more than 10,000 antisemitic incidents in the year since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, according to preliminary data from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL report comes weeks after the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, shared with Axios new data that showed 2023 hate crimes hit records across 10 of the nation's largest cities, rising 16%.
Brian Levin, the recently retired director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, tells Axios that antisemitic hate crimes historically rise during Jewish High Holy Days.
He says antisemitic and anti-Muslim hate crimes also rise every time there's a conflict in the Middle East.
Gender parity in Congress is a two-party game, and Republicans are lagging
The 19th
Meredith Conroy, professor of political science, discussed the decrease in Republican women running for U.S. House of Representatives positions in an article about gender parity in Congress. Women aren’t expected to make huge gains in Congress this year, largely driven by a drop in women Republican nominees for the House.
Women are also less likely to believe they are qualified to run for office than men, said Meredith Conroy, a professor of political science at California State University, San Bernardino, who studies gender and politics. Support like candidate trainings and financial backing can increase the perception that women candidates can win.
There are fewer groups dedicated to supporting Republican women running for office, especially compared with resources available to progressive candidates.
“PACs supporting women in the GOP are under-resourced, and less integrated into their party's donor network,” Conroy said. “That said, I think these organizations are vital, and the Republican Party's reluctance to bring them into the fold is why their candidates struggled this cycle.”
Efforts to elect more Republican women stalled in the 2024 primaries

Meredith Conroy, CSUSB professor of political science, wrote and op-ed column on the widening gap between the Democratic and Republican parties when it comes to electing women to office. She wrote: “These lopsided primary results for women will likely contribute to a growing disparity between the parties' female representation in Congress and governors' mansions: Democratic women currently make up 41 percent and Republican women make up just 15 percent of their respective parties' members of Congress, and eight of the 12 female governors currently serving are Democrats. After the November elections, these gaps could widen.”
