In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Cal State San Bernardino is proud to honor the rich histories, cultures and contributions of Native American communities through a series of events throughout November. The university will host a range of activities to foster greater understanding and respect for Indigenous heritage, inviting students, faculty, staff and the wider campus community to participate and learn.

CSUSB will host the Native American Heritage Month Kick-Off Event on Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), North-Patio Area. This event will commence with a speech by Mark Macarro, president of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI). Macarro, who is currently serving his 28th consecutive year as tribal chairman, will share his experiences and insights on leadership, advocacy, and the role of Native American communities in shaping the future. His address will take place from 10-11 a.m.

After Macarro's presentation, the kick-off festivities will continue with an engaging lineup, beginning with a traditional Bird Singing performance by Derek Duro and the Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian Bird Singers. Following this, champion Hoop Dancer Nanabah Kadenehii will perform, sharing insights into the history of her dances and her experiences as an Indigenous woman. These performances, scheduled from 11:45 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. on the SMSU-North Patio, will offer attendees a glimpse into the cultural expressions that are integral to Indigenous heritage.

Then, from 1-2:30 p.m., a special book signing and panel discussion with James Fenelon will be held in the Pfau Library, Room 4005 (4th floor). Fenelon, a CSUSB professor of sociology and director of the university's Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies, will discuss his work and engage in meaningful dialogue on Indigenous issues. The first attendees will receive a free copy of his book on a first-come, first-served basis.

Other events throughout the month include:
