On March 11, Cal State San Bernardino will host a discussion about the trailblazing legacy of Claudia H. Hampton, the first Black woman trustee in the California State University (CSU) system and a fierce advocate for educational access.
The event will feature Donna Nicol, associate dean for personnel and curriculum and professor of history at Cal State Long Beach, as she discusses her new book, “Black Woman on Board: Claudia Hampton, the California State University, and the Fight to Save Affirmative Action.” Francisca Afua Opoku-Boateng, assistant professor of cybersecurity, will moderate the discussion.
The event will take place at 1:30 p.m. in John M. Pfau Library, room 4005, and online via Zoom. It is free and open to the public.
Hampton dedicated two decades (1974-94) to increasing opportunities for historically marginalized and underrepresented students across the CSU system. Her work shaped policies that expanded access to higher education and strengthened the fight for affirmative action in California.
Following the talk, 10 copies of “Black Woman on Board” will be given away, and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a book signing with Nicol.
The program is sponsored by CSUSB Libraries, the Faculty Center for Excellence, the Office of Black Student Success, and the Black Faculty, Staff and Student Association.
