Over 145 CSUSB students have completed the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Bridges to Stem Cell Research Scholars Internship Program, which has propelled them into careers in research, Ph.D. programs, and acceptance into medical, dental and pharmacy schools.

The state-funded program is designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for careers in stem cell research and therapy development. This program offers participants comprehensive hands-on training in stem cell science, providing invaluable experience that is crucial for students pursuing careers in regenerative medicine.

Through the program, students have had the opportunity to work at renowned institutions, such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles/USC, City of Hope Beckman Research Institute, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and Loma Linda University. These collaborations provide students with exposure to cutting-edge research in the field of regenerative medicine, which focuses on developing stem cell-based treatments to repair or replace damaged tissues and organs caused by aging, disease or genetic defects.

Stem cells, which possess the unique ability to transform into various types of specialized cells, are at the forefront of medical research. Through their participation in the CIRM Bridges program, CSUSB students have made significant strides in understanding the potential of stem cells to develop therapies for ailments like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and muscular dystrophy.

One of the key benefits of the CIRM Bridges program is the monthly stipend, along with one year’s full tuition, provided to students. The financial support allows students to fully dedicate themselves to their research, alleviating the financial strain that often accompanies internships and ensuring that they can focus on advancing their skills and knowledge in the field.

Additionally, the CIRM Bridges program includes a student engagement component focused on patient interaction and community involvement. Students are given the opportunity to participate in activities with patient advocacy groups, assist in local healthcare events and organize educational seminars for community members.
